Cafe Oliv II - We're back for more!

After craving for a week & raving how heavenly the cafe oliv's brownie was, we finally went back again to satisfy our sweet tooth. Having read the good reviews on their soft shell crabs and lamb shank, we decided to give them a try!

Salty Egg Soft Shell Crabs Biscuit Fritter $6.90
J: I was simply bowled over when the softshell crab hits my tastebuds. This is e only soft shell crab I tried where I can find crab meat in its tiny legs & pincers. Normally for e legs, I can only taste e fried leg shell. There r also lotsa crab roe inside this softshell crab! It is also slightly saltier than ur usual softshell crab which may be due to e salty egg but not tt salty to turn u off. The biscuit crumbs make this dish absolutely crunchy & I really love their shredded sweet potato! Another surprise comes from Kevin's homemade thai mayonaise where they added thai chilli in it! I cant really taste any spicyness but this mayo is simply amazing! It's slightly sour which really whets my appetite & is my 2nd fav sauce after North Sea Fish Restaurant's homemade tartar sauce. :)
A: Well, what else can I say? GOT TO TRY IT! Soft shell crab full of crab meat & roe!

J's rating: 4.6/5, A's rating: 4.5/5

Black Pepper Chicken with Rosemary Sauce
Today we had a friend along with us! Annie ordered this dish & our 1st thought was gosh, this tastes like chicken satay! The chicken is really tender & e serving is soooo BIG tt it definitely make ur money worth. Annie mentioned that it tasted better towards the end!

Annie's rating: 4.2/5

Traditional Braised Lamb Shank $18.90 *MUST TRY!!*
J: I flew to heaven immediately when I had the 1st taste of this lamb shank. It was my 3rd surprise after the softshell crab & thai mayo. This lamb shank is sooooooo T-E-N-D-E-R that it literally falls off when u poke ur fork into it! U dont even need a knife for this dish, i swear! Just look at its pink flesh. OMG ahhhHHHhhhHHH this is H-E-A-V-E-N-L-Y!!! It's very well braised and I particularly enjoy eating it together with the oh-so-soft mashed potatoes. I just wish e lamb is much much bigger lol. more moRE, i want MORE!
A: How i wished i could give this dish a 5/5! BUT, there's definitely room for perfectionism!

Brownie with Ice-cream $5.90
J: We came all the way for this & obviously it failed to disappoint. Just look! The ice cream was actually melting & wobbling on top of e brownie when e waitress brought it to our tables. We had a brownie each & my 1st brownie wasnt warm enough to make me go wow. However, as usual, e brownie is choked full of crunchy walnuts & they were more generous with e cocoa powder this time round. 1 brownie was definitely not enough to satisfy our cravings & I shared another with sis. This time round we specifically requested for e brownie to be made really warm & this is it! WOW im loving it~ =D As u would know by now tt I have actually qt a low sweetness tolerance. The reason y i really love this brownie is tt e sweetness is just right for me & i never feel sick of eating it. Their mocha ice cream really complements well with this choc walnut brownie which at e same time, satisfy my love for coffee. Had wanted to sample their black sesame & red bean ice cream but unfortunately, Kevin told us tt they were removed from the menu cos they were not popular. Oh well, im satisfied with my mocha ice cream. :)
A: Damage for today??? 3 brownies for Janelle and I!!! Annie wanted to finish her brownie but she was just to full to finish it up! You can imagine how good it was!

J & A's ratings: 4.8/5 for WARM brownie with mocha chip ice cream

Cafe Oliv fails to disappoint once again & gave us many surprises during this visit. Will be back for more & I really hope Kevin can come up with some loyalty programme cos I can foresee tt we will be his regular customers soon. However, at this rate im eating, its gonna burn a HUGE hole in my wallet! :(

Mufiz Restaurant - Kopi Tarik anyone??

Found another gem right here at Upper Boon Keng! Janelle was cravinggg for prata that day so we decided to head to Mufiz to try out their prata. We ordered Teh Tarik & Kopi Tarik ($0.80)! Kopi Tarik was something new which we had never tried before.

The Teh Tarik was good! Thick & rich.
(J: I find it even better than President Teh Tarik cos its more gao)
Photobucket

However, Kopi Tarik was even better!
(A: I kept drinking Janelle's kopi tarik because it was so nice! It was even more "Gao" (thick) than Kopi 'O' & someone like me who doesn't drink coffee a lot love this Kopi Tarik!)
(J: Pardon me for being sua gu but I've never known e existence of kopi tarik. Really surprised at how thick this kopi was but it could be slightly too sweet for me. Tasted better when I requested for him to go easy on e condensed milk :))

Photobucket

Here comes our roti prata with banana! ($1.50)

Photobucket

We were surprised! The prata was so crispy with "melted" banana inside!
We were expecting thick firm slices of banana but the prata was done so well that the banana melted and oozed out when u sliced e prata apart! Amazing!
(J: The prata is slightly crispy at e top and its not e usual small fluffy traditional prata. It is more chewy as well.)

J's & A's rating: 4.5/5 Teh Tarik, 4.75/5 Kopi Tarik, 4.5/5 for banana prata (J: 4.25/5 for prata)

Cedele - Healthy & Organic Yummy Cakes!

Cedele by Bakery Depot is one of few bakeries in Singapore where you can find cakes and sandwiches that are healthy & transfat free! Besides, the food served are all organic.
We loved the cakes here because they're tasty and much healthier than other cafes.
The flour that they used are mostly whole wheat & high in fibre!

Here is a summary of the cakes that we tried!

Apple & Nut Cheesecake

This is the first cake that we tried at Cedele. The cheese is so smooth & melts in the mouth! They give generous amount of sweet, thick apple slices in the cheesecake and we loved the strussel nut toppings on the cake!

J's & A's rating: 4.75/5

Photobucket

Carrot Walnut Cake

This is Cedele's best seller! Generous amount of shredded carrots & california walnuts with cream cheese frosting! The cream cheese was not too sweet & heavy! A generally healthy cake for the diet concious!
(J: I absolutely love the crunch of the walnut chunks in this cake and this cake is quite moist too!)

J's & A's ratings: 4.75/5
Photobucket
Blueberry Hazelnut Cheesecake

This cake was a bit disappointing as there is very little blueberries and it tasted just like normal cheesecake.

J's & A's rating: 3.5/5

Photobucket

Orange Macademia Cheesecake

This cake was pretty exotic as we had never tried orange cheesecake before.
(A: I didn't like this cake as I feel the orange taste was too strong for me.)
(J: I enjoy the tanginess of the orange in this macademia cheesecake which makes it special for me. Downside? The macademia arent crunchy at all.)

A's rating: 3/5, J's raing: 3.75/5

Photobucket

Chocolate Cookies & Cream Cheesecake

This was actually their new cheesecake! Generous amount of crushed oreos but we feel that the cheesecake would be better if it was softer and lighter. Bakerzin's cookies & cream cheesecake was better.
(J: I felt that the cheese was quite heavy and e oreo has no crunch at all. Like 'lao hong' already haha)

A's ratings: 3.5/5, J's ratings: 3/5

Photobucket

Banana Meringue Pie

This pie was a surprised! It was amazingly good! The white foam was actually egg whites and the whole combination tasted so good! With slices of banana at the bottom, this pie was crispy (crust), moist (egg white foam) & soft!
(J: The crust is slightly tad too sweet for me. I wish the banana slices could be fresher too. Particularly enjoy how e foam dissolves in my mouth~)

J's & A's ratings: 4.25/5

Photobucket

Blueberry Maple Cake

We love blueberries! And we always look forward to this cake as we wanted to try it out. But this cake was a little disappointing as we expected something even better. However, the cake was flavoured with maple syrup and we quite like it (J: Reminds me of e times in vancouver~)! But it could be better if there's a "WOW" factor.

J's & A's rating: 4.25/5

Photobucket

Chocolate Banana Espresso Cake

This is a soft chocolate cake sandwiched with fresh caramelized banana, topped with espresso chocolate frosting, and finished with crunchy walnut strussel, oat strussel!
What makes this cake unique is the oat strussel!
(A: I feel that this cake was much better than Secret Recipe's choco banana cake. And I like it a lot!)
(J: I'm not a fan of choc banana n e only thing i enjoy abt this cake is e crunchy oat strussel. I'm curious how they managed to give a crunch to oats haha. Rest of it taste pretty ordinary to me n i get sick of eating it after a while.)

A's rating: 4.5/5, J's rating: 3.75/5

Photobucket

Black Sesame Cake with Tahini frosting

This is the cake that managed get to our top 3 list! Strong flavour of black sesame seeds reminds us of the black sesame paste! U can actually bite e individual sesame seeds. Do try it!
(J: Erm, e fig is tasteless.)

J's rating: 4.5/5, A's rating: 4.75/5

Photobucket

Raisin & Cranberry Scones

The scones here were quite disappointing as it tasted cakey rather than soft and fluffy. We feel that Good Morning Nanyang's scones are much better than this.

J's rating: 3/5, A's rating: 3.75/5

Good Morning Nanyang Cafe : Yummy scones!

Didn't expect that they will have such yummy raisin scones here! (J: Unlike Cedele's scones which were more cakey, this scone is softer inside and not too dry! Previously when we tried their scones, they actually topped the scones with cinnamon n sprinkled some sugar on top which gives the scone extra crunch on e top crust. It's as though the top is caramelized.) The scone was served with strawberry jam when we 1st tried it. When we went back today, we requested the scones to be served with orange marmalade.
*Got to top up 50 cents if you want other jams!*

Photobucket

Scones with orange marmalade had a very special taste of e orange peel.
And we were lucky on saturday as the owner of the cafe, Bryon was there and he let us try the ginger jam from scotland! It was so delicious! Even better than the orange marmalade! Janelle and I both hate ginger because of the spicyness but this ginger jam is not spicy at all!
It was sweet with the ginger fragrance. Very refreshing! (J: It perks me up immediately)
It was the best jam we've tasted so far.
Feeling unsatisfied as usual, we order 2nd serving of the raisin scone each. And Bryon was kind enough to give us extra serving of ginger jam without charging us extra!
Wanted to buy the ginger jam but it was freaking ex!! $13 for a small bottle.

Photobucket

They do have other special jam such as strawberry with champagne. We would love to try it next time. Do try the ginger jam if you're there! Unique, refreshing & de-li-cious!

Guangdong Wanton Mee- Where's the queue??

When we reached maxwell, we thought that we went to the wrong stall. There was no queue at all unlike e other famous maxwell stalls. However, we decided to give it a try anw n gosh, im certainly glad we did! This beef kuay teow is definitely different from Bugis (Longhouse) Lim Kee Beef Noodle at Golden Mile Food Centre & they r not comparable. They're both delicious in their own ways. Lim Kee's beef kuay teow uses lean beef slices n e gravy is thicker. This beef brisket kuay teow has pieces of beef that r soo tender that they almost melt in ur mouth! The beef r braised to perfection n taste absolutely heavenly~ The kuay teow is sooo slippery smooth. Their gravy is more liquid, creamier n saltier as compared to Lim Kee's. However, we followed ieatishoot's style of eating by combining the sui gao with beef brisket gravy. It's v shiok!! Peppery, creamy, less salty, wah~!! I'm loving it~ =D

Beef Brisket Kuay Teow ($3)
Photobucket

The sui gao (pork dumplings) r really fresh! The skin is v thin n generously filled with pork n shrimps! Very juicy n crunchy! The soup is good too but I will love it more if they can reduce the pepper haha. For just $3, u get 7 big fresh sui gao. Definitely worth every penny!

Barcook Bakery- so soft tt u can eat it w/o dentures!

The German Museli Loaf
Photobucket

Raisin Cream Cheese Bun just came out of the oven! So fat and fluffy!!
Photobucket

Look at the cheese oozing out!!! The bread is so soft!!
Photobucket

J: Oh no here I go again, WAHHHHH!!! i found my bread heaven in sg! Barcook Bakery serves the softest bread n buns u can ever find in sg! U can easily locate this shop at hong lim complex simply by following the smell of the bread loaves. Upon reaching, it's no surprise to see a long queue unless u really reach early in e morning when they just opened n most bread arent ready yet lol. The best seller of this bakery is of course their raisin cream bun ($1.30). It is sooooo soft, airy n fluffy! Their cream cheese oozes out of the bun when u sink ur teeth into it! The cream cheese texture is cream n not too sticky. Its not too heavy to make u feel sick after finishing 1 bun. Everytime i finish 1 raisin cream i regretted not buying 2! And needless to say, its best eaten IMMEDIATELY when its just out of the oven n e bun is still fat n hot haha. Trust me, it's isnt as nice when it gets cold n deflates into e flat raisin cream. Microwaving it at home doesnt raise its quality to tt when its just hot out of the oven.

My 2nd fav must be their german muesili loaf ($3.50) which is always reserved. So be sure to call n reserve it before collecting! They r really generous with the seeds n nuts in german muesili loaf. Best eaten within the 1st day bcos the bread is really soft. It is soo soft that u gotta hold it with both hands while eating bcos it gets flimsy lol.

A: Even someone like me who doesn't like cheese LOVE THIS CREAM CHEESE BUN!!

J & A's ratings: 5/5 for raisin cream fresh out of the oven, 4.75/5 for german muesili loaf

Bugis (Long House) Lim Kee Beef Noodle- Legendary Beef Kuay Teow sooo good that you can't stop!

After watching a super nice movie "Ice Age 3" (MUST WATCH!!), we head off to Golden Mile Food Centre for a budget dinner! Haha..we probably spent too much on food the past few days.

We were searching high and low for Lim Kee Beef noodle and finally found it hiding in the basement! It was situated near the muslim stalls and if you do not know, you'll probably can't find it! The owner told us that they had been there since years ago before the Muslims stalls began to move in . Afraid that their regulars cannot find their stall, the owner decided to stay at where it was. If you had been to Golden Mile food centre, you would have noticed that most chinese stalls were on the first level and the muslim stalls mostly on the basement.

We ordered the dry version of Beef Kuay Teow $4. It was super shiok! The owner even included chopped peanuts inside! It was said to give extra crunch and fragrance to the beef kuay teow. And this was true! Janelle even took an extra scoop of peanuts from the owner! The sauce was super shiok~~~ kuay teow was sooo smooth & slippery tt they literally slipped down our throats! The beef is exceptionally tender! It was fantastic! Never know that we could enjoy such a fantastic beef kuay teow!

Photobucket

Here comes the beef balls!

Photobucket

OMG! It was sooo "Q"! The beef balls were made using the calve muscles of the beef. No wonder it was so springy! Next time if we come by Golden Mile food centre, this is the dish that we will definitely order. Following which would be our belgium waffles at level 1!

Chin Mee Chin Confectionary- a disappointing & unhappy breakfast

J: Upon stepping into this confectionary, immediately i had e feelings of e old sch kopitiam. There r displays of the various buns n puffs & CMC's kitchen is v open where u can c all e workers baking, making kopis, tehs, half-boiled eggs etc. However, one major turnoff was the attitude of this auntie who made herself looked v busy although there's only 1 couple other than us waiting to order our food. She made us wait & gave us the cant-be-bothered attitude while taking our orders & this really pissed us off. Woke up early for a nice breakfast & this is what we got grRRrr. Anw, the breakfast was a MAJOR DISAPPOINTMENT too.

Raisin Bun & Custard Puff

Homemade Kaya Soft Bun
Photobucket

Kopi O
Photobucket

The custard puff is the kind of custard which i hated most. Buttery jammy texture, not the milky smooth liquid custard which I like. The raisin bun has a very awkward taste which smelled weird to me. Most decent bun of all must be their homemade bun with kaya which is a soft fluffy bun slapped with sweet smooth kaya. Well, the bun is decent but the kaya's tad too sweet for me. Lastly, my kopi-o tasted like plain water. Diluted and not gao at all. I only had 3 sips n left with almost a cup full of kopi-o. Very disappointing indeed. Oh i forgot to mention they took years to make e half boiled eggs! We finished all the buns n puffs n e auntie hasnt even started making our eggs. In e end, we cancelled our orders -.-"" I would never head back to CMC confectionary again.

A: Nothing much to comment as I feel that the raisin bun, custard puff was horrible! And hoping that I could find a better Teh 'C' Kao after Tong Ya, I decided to order the same thing from CMC. It tasted like DRAIN WATER! Yucks!

J's ratings: 2/5 for custard puff, raisin bun & kopi-o, 3/5 for homemade bun with kaya
A's ratings: 2/5 for custard puff, raisin bun & Teh C Kao, 3/5 for homemade bun with kaya

Mr Obanyaki- Yummy fish pancake!

We found a yummy japanese snack in Takashimaya! Tayaki!

Photobucket

Taiyaki is actually a Japanese fish-shaped cake made by using pancake batter. The batter is poured into a fish-shaped mold for each side. The filling is then put on one side and the mold is closed. It is then cooked on both sides until golden brown.

A: Janelle first introduced this to me when we were at Raffles City last week. Frankly speaking, I had never tried this fish pancake before. However, the Taiyaki at Raffles City Basement doesn't taste good. It was cold and sticky inside with very little azuki red bean paste. Janelle then told me that there is a better one right at Takashimaya!

The Taiyaki at Taka is so delicious! Crispy on the outside and soft inside. Most importantly, It was hot from the mold, filled with a generous amount of azuki red bean paste! I love it soo much! Other flavours that they have include chocolate and cheese. However I feel that Japanese sweet snack tasted best with azuki red bean!

J: I would have given a higher rating if i can bit the red beans from the red bean paste.

J's & A's rating: 4.5/5
